How to Create Outdoor Spaces

As the weather warms and visions of barbecues dance in our heads, email inboxes start to swell with promises of “patio sets that wow” and “stylish summer decor.” But how can you design an outdoor oasis that stands the test of time? One that beautifully balances refinement and relaxation? Stephen Elton, outdoor furniture expert and chief brand curator at Brown Jordan, shares his top five tips below.

1. Go Classic With a Twist

Contemporary pieces that draw from the past will bring longevity to your design. Embrace iconic shapes, such as the graceful curves of midcentury modern chairs, with a fresh spin, such as flexible straps or a brass frame. Look for ways to connect the past and present. “I don’t want something that looks brand-new, but rather like it owns the place. Like it belongs,” Elton says.

He also suggests sticking with muted color palettes for furniture and cushions — such as white, beige or gray — and then adding bolder accents with texture, landscaping, tableware and throw pillows. Whatever you choose, Elton says, ask yourself, “Am I going to like this as much five years from now as I do today?”

2. Focus on Comfort

More and more, people are creating “outdoor rooms” full of the same luxuries and amenities they enjoy indoors. To achieve optimum comfort outside, select furniture with flexible straps, plush cushions, throw pillows and deep seating.

Try chairs that rock or swivel, or consider common indoor shapes, such as a sectional or a chair with an ottoman. Install an awning or pergola for shelter, and add fans and heating for extra comfort. “Gathering outdoors is no longer just about dining, but lounging, relaxing and enjoying the good life,” Elton says.

3. Stay Cohesive

As outdoor living spaces become an extension of the home, it’s important to create an easy visual flow between them. “Stay consistent with color and style while bringing some of the elements that you have inside-outside,” Elton says.

If you prefer neutral tones, for example, look for outdoor furniture in a similar palette, as seen here, and then add decor in pops of color that you’d find around your house. For more vibrant homes, opt for bright outdoor furniture and decor that stands out. Textured fabrics and matte textiles can help create an outdoor look that could just as easily be found in your family room.

4. Mix to Match

Not everything needs to be the exact same color and pattern, however, to create a cohesive outdoor space. “Eclectic and elegant mixing of materials is a big trend right now,” Elton says. Combine materials such as teak, aluminum, brass and woven fabric, and vary the hues. The mix of stripes and solids in cream and taupe seen here, for example, offers a sophisticated look.

For an elevated aesthetic, opt for fashion-inspired designs such as houndstooth or botanical, or textured fabric with a linen or chenille effect. “Texture as a design element gives furniture more dimension, interest and life,” Elton says. Fabric that weaves more than one color or shade provides richness without being too busy, he adds.

5. Express Yourself

Elton’s most important piece of advice? “Put your own twist on it. Put your own personality on it. Make it you,” he says. Elton suggests looking at your interiors for the items that you’re drawn to, whether that’s a bright orange chair or a sculptural table. Then let those pieces inspire your outdoor living spaces. Just as a colorful tie can add a lively twist to a more muted suit, unique accent pieces can enliven your patio. Most of all, Elton says, “Make sure when you go out there, you’re in your own element. Enjoy it.”
